Over the weekend in Malaga, Spain, the heart of the Costa del Sol resort region of Andalucia, the USA continued their World Cup warmup preparations with two marquee national teams: #7 Slovenia and #1 Spain.
Against Slovenia, the USA had a close match, but controlled it the whole time, leading 27-20 at the end of the first quarter. Then, in the 2nd quarter, the USA went through a really good period of time where they extended the lead to 41-24, leading at half time, 47-31. The USA was able to extend this lead to 57-35, before closing out the 3rd quarter up 67-49. The 4th quarter saw USA extend their lead once again, getting it to 92-62 for the win. While some key players like Luka Dončić (Slovenia) was out, the USA still played a spectacular game.

The USA found themselves down 26-28 in front of a very pro-Spanish sold out crowd at the end of the 1st quarter. However, the Americans responded with a great 2nd quarter to take a 10 point lead into halftime, 55-45. The Spanish had a very good 3rd quarter as they chipped into the USA lead, as the USA now led just 73-72. After trading leads, the USA was able to assert full dominance later on in the 4th quarter, winning 98-88. This was a huge win for a young American squad as this was a #1-#2 matchup, away to the #1 nation in the world who are the current defending World and European Champions, while the USA are the defending Olympic Champions.
