Delacroix (3.25)

Last year, Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor had the favorite to win the Epsom Derby with City Of Troy. Also, unsurprisingly, O’Brien was the trainer and jockey Ryan Moore was aboard that horse as well.

City Of Troy met expectations and pulled away to win the 2024 Epsom Derby. This highly successful team is back together, and once again, have an incredibly talented racehorse in their stable.

Delacroix is the rightful favorite to win the 2025 Epsom Derby at 3.25. In fact, given the horse’s recent form, he should probably have a shorter price than the current Epsom Derby betting odds suggest.

He’s a winner in four of seven assignments, including the Autumn Stakes (Gr. 3), Ballysax Stakes (Gr. 3), and the Derby Trial Stakes (Gr. 3), most recently on May 11. Delacroix has placed at least 2nd in all seven of the starts in his career!

Barring an incident or getting bumped hard, Delacroix will be in the running for the top prize at Epsom Downs. He’s too good of a horse to not be involved in the stretch run. At 3.25 odds to win the Epsom Derby, O’Brien’s Delacroix young colt is well worth considering!

Pride Of Arras (5.00)

Despite not being the most experienced horse in this race, Pride Of Arras needs to have immense respect heading to the starting gate. He’s only ran in two races but has made the best of it.

In his latest performance, Pride Of Arras won the Dante Stakes (Gr. 2) in a stunning upset. O’Brien thought he had the winner with The Lion in Winter, but Pride Of Arras came out of nowhere to win in his stakes debut with a time of 2:11.56.

Note that Pride Of Arras was 50-1 to win the Epsom Derby before the big win. There isn’t much history to go by with this horse. Yes, it was an impressive performance, but was it just a flash in the pan? I don’t believe anyone can accurately provide an answer at this stage of his career.

The three-year-old colt from Ireland wasn’t on most people’s radar before storming to a win at York on May 15. The way I see it, the statement win has resulted in Pride Of Arras being over-bet. The value that was on this runner previously isn’t present at 5.00 odds.

In other words, Pride Of Arras isn’t on my shortlist of Epsom Derby 2025 picks!

Ruling Court (5.00)

The power duo of Charlie Appleby and William Buick team up for a chance to win the Epsom Derby with Ruling Court. Appleby is a two-time winner of the Epsom Derby, with victories in 2018 and 2021.

Although he doesn’t have the success rate of O’Brien in this race, Appleby is one of the most respected trainers in the UK. He has a good horse with Ruling Court, too. Appleby’s colt and Pride Of Arras have the same odds to win the race, but I put Ruling Court ahead.

Bred in Kentucky, the American colt has won three of four races in his career. Three of which were impressive stakes runs in the Maiden Stakes, Jumeirah 2000 Guineas (LS), and English 2000 Guinease (Gr. 1).

In his latest outing, Ruling Court edged out the field in an impressive display by a length for a Grade 1 win. It was Ruling Court’s Grade 1 debut, but he handled the race like a champ against a tough field.

Additionally, you have a winning jockey like Buick piloting Ruling Court on Saturday. Although he might have issues getting past Delacroix, expect Ruling Court to be in the mix at the wire.

1. Purview (41.00)

As one of the best Epsom Derby bets on the board, Purview is getting a ton of value to win the race at 41.00 odds! For a horse that is capable of keeping up with the pace in the stretch, Purview is being overlooked by bettors at the moment.

Like Pride Of Arras, Purview is not an experienced runner. This will actually only be his second stakes entry and third race overall, but he pushed Pride Of Arras in the Derby Trial Stakes (Gr. 3) to place second. Purview was clocked at 2:10.59 in the 1 ¼ mile race, an outstanding start to his career, to finish within reach of the winner.

Expect Purview to build on that performance and perhaps do one better here. It’s a longshot, but at 41.00, Purview is worth a look as one of the best Epsom Derby picks!

2. Stanhope Gardens (17.00)

After a mediocre debut to finish third in July 2024, Beckett’s Stanhope Gardens has been off and running. Pride Of Arras is garnering all of the attention in Beckett’s barn, but Stanhope Gardens can’t be overlooked.

Stanhope Gardens is 1st, 2nd, and 1st in his previous three trips. He is coming off a strong win in the MPS Services Group Conditions Stakes on May 24. All indications are that Stanhope Gardens is in quality form and should have an opportunity to strike.

With this in mind, I recommend adding Stanhope Gardens to your shortlist of 2025 Epsom Derby best bets!
